Interview with -OZ- in Moscow

On January 29, right before the final concert of their tour 「A FACT OF LIFE」~Europe Tour 2011~, -OZ- gave a small press-conference.

The band was very short on time before the concert, so their management suggested that the interview should be in the form of a press-conference for the representatives of the main Russian media dedicated to Japanese music. We gathered together to discuss the tour, their impressions, the band itself and the guys in particular.


Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Natsuki: I am Natsuki.
Aki: I am Aki, on guitar.
Tama: I’m Tama, on guitar.
Nao: I’m Nao, on bass.
Zukki: I’m Zukki, on drums.

How did the name -OZ- appear?

Natsuki: It was just the way it looked and sounded, actually. It looks great and sounds interesting. Tamaproposed to name the band that way and we all agreed. This is how the name -OZ- was born.

Can you tell us a little bit about the history of your band?

Natsuki: In 2005 Aki and I played in another band; Tama and Nao as well. When these two bands split up, we decided to form a band all together. Then Zukki joined us; and that's how -OZ- was formed in 2005.

How did the idea of using lighters during the shows come about?
(The guys discuss the question.)

Aki: Natsuki.
Natsuki: There is this tradition all over the world to turn on lighters during the shows. However, this is not true for Japan, where it’s considered dangerous and is forbidden, to prevent accidents. We thought that this was a great idea and we wanted to do something that no one had done before. We like this feeling, when we see the whole audience with lighters; it makes the concert easier and more cheerful.

You used a photograph of your fans with lighters for the cover of your single. What does it mean for you?

Natsuki: During the show, where this photo was taken, we distributed a special 16-page photo book. One could get this photo book only during that live. To remember this day and to thank all of our fans who came to this concert we put their photograph on the cover of our single.

Why did you choose the name Rouge for your latest album?
(everyone laughs)

Natsuki: We released our first album and passed a certain period of our music career. When the time came to release the second album, we wanted to mark it as a step forward, that with this we move to a new level. We used the word “rouge” meaning “red lipstick” because that's like a sign of when a girl grows up and becomes a woman. The same way, to mark our “growing up”, we chose this particular title.

And why did you choose a French word “rouge” for this?

Natsuki: Just because this is how we call red lipstick in Japan. We didn’t do it for any particular reason.

This is your first world tour; what did you expect from it when you left Japan half a month ago?

Natsuki: We expected it to be more tiresome, but it turned out that it wasn’t so difficult.

You visited eight countries. Which country impressed you most of all?

Aki: Germany because we spent four full days there and we managed to visit some interesting sights. Both architecture and people in Germany impressed us most of all, probably due to the fact that we had a lot of time to enjoy it.
(a little pause)
Aki (speaking in English): Sorry. (the guys laugh) But… Russia is great!
(they laugh)
Aki: We took a night train from Saint-Petersburg to Moscow.
Natsuki: It was amazing! We didn’t expect that it was possible to fall asleep in Saint-Petersburg and wake up in Moscow.

Did you sleep well?

Aki: Yes, we slept quite well!

Surely there were some interesting and funny moments during this tour. Can you share any of them with us?

All together (laugh and point at Aki): Aki!
Aki: We are in Europe for the first time and we are not used to doors closing automatically. You always have to carry your key with you in order to get back. Even if you leave your room for a few minutes to smoke, you have to have the key to get back. Once I went out and I couldn’t get back. I had to wait for someone to pass by me to ask for help. Then finally we managed to call the reception and open the door.

Today is the last day of your tour. What will you remember about it? What was good and what was bad during these few weeks?

(The guys take a long pause and exchange looks, Natsuki gives the question to Aki and then Aki passes it toNao.)
Nao: Eh… The main thing was the language barrier. People in Europe don’t understand Japanese, so the only way of communicating with them was music and the way we played on stage. We learned a lot during this tour, especially how to express our feelings and emotions in some different ways, apart from words.

Speaking about people, how do your European fans differ from the Japanese ones?

Tama: It seems that in Europe all people are on their own whereas in Japan they are more united.

Do you plan to give more concerts in Europe? Or maybe go to America some day?

Zukki: If they call us, we will come. We would like to go back to Europe, and go to America as well.

What were your impressions of Russia in one word?

Natsuki: Cold! (everyone laughs) But…
Band’s interpreter: Only one word! (laugh all together)
Natsuki: It also snows in our hometown in Japan, but the snow here in Russia is very different from that.
Aki: (in English) Delicious! Russian food is very tasty!

What did you manage to try?

Aki: Soup, pizza, chicken, latte…
Natsuki: VODKA!
All (laugh): Oooooh!!! Vodka!!! Nao drank a lot.
Aki: Yesterday he drank a lot in the train: vodka – water – vodka – water – vodka – beer…

Your concert in Saint-Petersburg last night, how did it go? What were your impressions?

Natsuki: The audience cried “A-RI-GA-TOU”! This is the first time we heard the whole audience yell “arigatou”! We were very touched by this.

What do you think about your Russian fans? Some say that Russian fans are very crazy and wild.

Natsuki: It’s not that the fans are crazy or insane; they are just enjoying the concert.

And what about -OZ- ? Are you crazy enough? Do you plan anything unusual tonight? To jump from the stage for example?

Natsuki: Ooooh… No, today we don’t plan to do any stage diving because the stage is quite high… (switches to English) But… BUT… I don’t know. (Back to Japanese) We’ll see how it goes, maybe we’ll do something. (Again speaks English) Every day, every stage… crazy.

Can you please say a few words about each member of the band? Let’s start with Nao.

Aki: (in English) Nice guy! He has long hair.
Natsuki: (in English) Weak! He catches colds easily. He plays his bass great.
Aki: He is good to everyone. And he is very easy-going.

Nao, there are a lot of photos of the food in your blog. Is it your passion?

Nao and Aki (together): Yes!
Aki: He loves to eat. His favourite food is ramen and curry.
Natsuki: He eats it in tons!

Did you bring any food from Japan?

Nao: Yes, miso soup, noodles…

And now, a few words about Zukki.

Natsuki: He is a genius!
(Our interpreter translated it into Russian. Natsuki repeated this word as it sounded in Russian and the guys started to laugh. Then Natsuki explained that the way it sounds in Russian is the same as the Japanese for “comedy”.)
Aki: To some extent… And he is very pale, like Russians.

Zukki always speaks very little during interviews. It seems that he is very shy.

Natsuki: I think we spoilt him a little bit. We always treat him as our younger brother.

What about Aki?

Zukki: Aki is a leader!
Natsuki: Comedy! (everyone laughs) He is a comedian… And he is a very interesting person. He always cheers us up and puts us in good spirits.

And now a few words about Tama.

Natsuki: He likes to drink sake and beer.
Aki: I think he has the best ear for music.
Natsuki: Once he mistook his mobile phone for his purse. He took it out, took off the battery and tried to pick money from it.

And finally – Natsuki.

Nao: Nothing to say.
(Everybody laughs, then they take a long pause to think.)
Zukki: He is the most serious one.
Aki: (in English) “IT-boy”. He likes computers a lot.
Zukki: I can’t remember anything good about him (everybody laughs).
Natsuki: You’re cruel!
Zukki: I can’t say anything bad, and I don’t want to say good things.
All: He thinks that he has the longest legs (everybody laughs).

the GazettE celebrated their 9th birthday with a spectacular live at Zepp Tokyo.

A young crowd waited patiently for the GazettE on the night of March 10th at Zepp Tokyo for the opportunity to celebrate live with the band their 9th anniversary. Both male and female fans trying to copy their idols displayed a wide range of hair colors from bright pink/red, to yellow and white gray. The tour t-shirts and towels were another common feature amongst the crowd. On stage the band’s logo was displayed, illuminated by dark red lights. Outside the night was cold but ZEPP was packed with no empty seat in the house. The fans were on fire anticipating what the GazettE had in store for them.

the GazettE didn’t make their fans wait. At 18.30 sharp the lights went down and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy started playing. Immediately a massive cheer echoed through the venue and the thrilled fans started clapping in perfect synchrony, welcoming the members who stepped onstage one by one. Kai was first, followed by Uruha,Reita and Aoi - all clad in black. Aoi’s pinkish red hair stood out in the sea of black and Uruha looked unusually sober with his now black hair, a white lock popping out under all the black. Ruki was last and the crowd had a particularly warm welcome in store for him.

They were off to a hot start with LINDA~candydive Pinky heaven~ from their 2003 EP Super Margarita, a familiar number the fans knew at once, clapping first right then left, all in unison. Aoi appeared to have some technical difficulties with his guitar half way through the song but it didn’t interfere much with the performance, and once the problems were solved he was more than happy to join in with clapping and dancing. Uruha also delighted the fans with some sexy dancing. It was impressive how the fans knew all the hand choreography and to see teenage girls in mini-skirts moshing and crowd surfing.

With the fans well worked up it was time for another old favorite - Akai onepiece. “Come on!” shouted Ruki and the excited crowd followed shouting “Oi, oi, oi!” while pumping their fists to the music. Ruki managed to thrill the fans even further by spitting some water into the crowd. The fans moved as one, a sea of arms waving to the right, the left, then up and down reminiscent of a sand storm.

The mosh continued for Psychedelic Heroine. Kai was very energetic and never stopped smiling whilst Uruha’s performance was impressive with the guitarist showing off his amazing skills without ever neglecting his fans. As the song approached its end, it was time for Aoi to shine with a solo that drove the fans wild. The song ended and Ruki addressed the fans for the first time that night, thanking them for coming and for their support over the years. The lights went down and Ruki’s devilish laughter echoed throughout the venue. Immediately, hair of all different colors started flying violently to Hyena. It was time for some fan service as Uruha approached Ruki and the latter slowly and sensuously licked his ear to delighted squeals. The light show for AGONY was very interesting - red, green and purple lights flashed in turn and transformed the live-house into a night club. “Tokyo!! Come on!!” shouted Ruki over and over as the fans jumped up and down. The crowd was very enthusiastic and when Ruki screamed “What’s your name?” they immediately understood that Maggots was next. VOICELESS FEAR from their latest single, PLEDGE, left the fans uncertain of what to do, unfamiliar with the new choreography. Guren and PLEDGE followed and although Uruha did an amazing job on guitar solos, the show went through a lull.

For the second MC of the night, Ruki spoke about the new tour and its concept, thanking the fans for their support. “It’s our 9th anniversary though it seems like it`s been longer.” The statement was greeted by a loud cheer and the GazettE went back to what they do best as it was again time for head-banging with HEADACHE MAN and VERMIN. HESITATING MEANS DEATH followed and Ruki graced the crowd with his famous legs apart, elbows on the knees, violent head-banging from one side to the other. The fans followed suit and soon many girls were copying him, some on their knees, others on all fours, hair swaying to the music. “Oi Tokyo!!! Can you give me more?” shouted Ruki, the crowd replying with a loud cheer - but for Ruki it was not enough and he challenged the fans to raise their voices, saying, “That’s not loud enough! Are you ready for more?” With the audience shouting at the top of their lungs it was time for another old classic - COCKROACH - and some moreRuki-style head banging. The fans were not tired yet and did everything to catch their idol’s eye, some jumping, others waving frantically. The head banging continued for the last two songs before the encore - DISCHARGEand Filth in the beauty.

The fans were not ready to go home yet and patiently waited for 10 minutes shouting “Encore” over and over again like a mantra. After a long wait, Kai and Reita came back on stage and entertained the fans with the energetic Ride with the ROCKERS. Both took turns with the microphone and thanked the fans. “We have been together for 9 years now having a great time with you guys! For me it will be so for 10, 20, 30 more years, until we die!” Reita reassured the fans. Soon Uruha, Aoi and Ruki joined the two on stage. “Happy Birthday!!” shouted Ruki in English to which the audience reacted with shouting and clapping. Taking his position in the center of the stage, he introduced the next song, shouting “I am…, I am… I am Ruder." It was Reita’s turn to shine with Ruki warmly calling “Rei-chan” to take the central rise for the bass solo.

Doro darake no seishun was very energetic and funny with Aoi and Uruha dancing, Uruha kindly shoving Aoi off as if to say “This is my space”. Aoi wasn`t intimidated though, shaking his hips to the music and going toReita’s side - both dancing together to the fans' delight. Aoi seemed to be in a great mood and kept encouraging his fans to shout more and more, and they eagerly complied. As the song ended and the fans shouted for their favorite band member, a massive birthday cake was brought in and at once the audience started singing Happy Birthday to the band. Meanwhile, Uruha and Kai made fun of the intriguingly huge hat worn by the person who brought the cake. Everyone was in a great mood and it improved further when Ruki announced that all would have a turn talking for that night’s MC.

Uruha went first. “It’s been a long time”, he said. “I can’t believe they brought a cake! 10 years for a band is legendary, I think! Not that we will break up after another year!” he added, laughing. Kai was next, excusing his short MC with the fact that he had already spoken during the drum and bass duet. “Wouldn’t you rather hear from someone who hasn’t said anything yet?” he teased, handing the microphone to Aoi. “I love hearing your voices,” Aoi exclaimed, greeted by a male voice shouting his name. Hearing this, Aoi turned around with a surprised look on his face and asked “Yes?” a massive laugh from both the fans and the band echoed around the venue making it hard for him to hear his own voice. “I can’t hear my voice. My voice is pretty, isn’t it?” Receiving no reply and seeing Kai stand up and chat to a staff member, Aoi threatened to pass the microphone to someone else, greeted in turn by a big “Eh??” from the crowd. “I feel loved!” he exclaimed with a smile, passing the microphone to Reita, who was thankful for the support. Ruki reinforced what Uruha had said, noting how hard it is for a band to last so long with the same members while tasting the cake with his finger.

As the night approached its climax, the GazettE granted the fans with more head banging during THE $OCIAL RIOT MACHINE$ and Kanto dogeza kumiai. The staff and security personnel had a hard time during the latter as the fans kept crowd surfing. The old favorite, ✰BEST FRIENDS✰, was indeed a perfect choice for the end of the show, reflecting what has kept the band together for 9 years and will, according to the members, keep them together for many more to come. As the members left the stage one by one, Knocking on heaven’s door byGuns’n’ Roses began. Again, the fans tirelessly demanded an encore and it was time for the last surprise of the night, Anatanotame no konoinochi. Uruha’s performance and guitar solo were impressive, and Aoi was very energetic and tried his best to entertain his fans, dancing and shaking his hips to most songs while doing the infamous Aoi-dance to the delight of the fans. It was a perfect way to end the night and thank the fans for their support and love with both band and fans singing the chorus as one.

Satoshi and ShuU discuss their latest album, performing live and the Japanese earthquake.

Despite appearing a little under the weather, vocalist Satoshi spoke to us, together with bassist ShuU, a few hours before girugamesh's third London live at the O2 Academy Islington.


Welcome to London. Obviously everyone’s thoughts are with those who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Where were you when you heard about it and what impact has it had on you?

Satoshi: We were in Berlin when we first heard the news. When I first heard about the earthquake, I couldn't believe it at all. After checking the internet and YouTube, I realised that it was true and I was really shocked.

You’re currently collecting money to help victims of the tsunami. How has the fan response been?

ShuU: At the signing sessions all the fans were worried about it and asked how our friends and families were, if everything was ok. We got the impression that everyone was very worried about our homeland and people, and that not just our fans but the whole world has been very concerned.

And is everyone alright back home?

Both: Yes, our families and relatives are ok.

That's good to hear. So this current tour started on the 5th of March. How has it been so far?

Satoshi: It's been going really great. It's our first European tour for two years, so we wanted to have as much fun as possible and also wanted the audience to have a lot of fun as well. We're really trying to enjoy ourselves on this tour.

This is your third live in Islington. Is it starting to become quite familiar now?

ShuU: To be honest, the previous times we didn't have any time at all to go out and see the city. Yesterday we had a day off and time to walk around and explore the city: we walked through the streets behind our hotel and had a look at the small shops and things, and the scenery reminded us a bit of Japanese scenery. Even though we hadn't walked around that area before it had a familiar ambiance in parts.

The weather hasn't been great recently as well - Satoshi-san appears a bit unwell (he is wearing a face mask and coughing quite a bit). Are you ok?

Satoshi: Yes, I'm ok!

Last time we interviewed you here you said that you’d like to sample the local Japanese food, specifically MISO down the road. Have you managed to do that now? Verdict, if so?

ShuU: We did try the MISO down the road last time actually. We ordered sushi as it looked really nice, like real sushi. However what arrived was vegetable sushi, so what looked like tuna fish was actually red pepper. We were really surprised, but they had taken all the time to prepare it for us so we ate it all (laughs)!

How’s your English now with all this international touring?

Satoshi: As far as I'm concerned my English hasn't really improved. I can understand a little bit but not much, and I can't reply in English.

ShuU: One of the other band members is learning English seriously at the moment. As for me, I'm trying my best to learn and communicate better with the fans.

How about any other languages?

ShuU: We're touring with quite a few German crew members and they all speak German to each other, so I think I'd like to learn that someday.

Your latest album has the quite succinct title of GO. Why did you decide to name it that?

ShuU: The title GO represents our positive feelings. We wrote many songs for the album with optimistic lyrics and melodies. Our music used to be quite negative before, but with this album we wanted to go in a positive direction and we wanted to reflect this in the title.

Is it also a pun, because it is your fifth album (the Japanese for five is go)?

ShuU: (laughing) Yes, it is meant to be that too!

Can you tell us about the inspirations for GO, lyrically and musically?

ShuU: We put our positive feelings and energy into the album as music has helped us a lot. We wanted to help our fans with our music and give positivity to them so it was with that intent that it was written.

Satoshi: Lyrically, I wrote about those people and fans we met whilst we've been girugamesh, who we wouldn't have met otherwise. We wanted to show them how appreciative we are of the bond we formed with these other people, and that was the concept.

What led to this change to write more positively?

ShuU: We managed to rid ourselves of the negativity which we wrote and played with before. This is my personal story but one of the band's colleagues died last year, and I started to think that I can't keep looking back with negative feelings. I decided the most important thing was to look at now and the future.

Where would you like to GO if you could go anywhere at all?

ShuU: Good question!

Satoshi: I'd like to go back to my house in Japan, and check if my room is ok after the earthquake.

ShuU: Me too!

When we interviewed you back in 2009, ShuU-san said that there was still some discrimination against visual kei in Japan and you would like to change that. Is there any change yet in your opinion?

ShuU: There are still many negative perceptions of visual kei. For example if you look at Marilyn Manson in the US: he's a very popular artist with many fans but the majority of people think that he's really strange. That's the case with visual kei as well. But I still have a very strong will to change this view with our music.

What do you think you might be doing if you weren’t in music?

Satoshi: I can't imagine doing anything else.

ShuU: I think I might be working in a pasture, with cows (laughs).

Do you have any funny stories from being on tour?

ShuU: Hmm...well one of the Japanese members of the crew on this tour didn't think that European winters would be very harsh so he only brought one jersey with him (laughs). It was really funny to watch him when it was really cold!

And finally, can you give a message to your fans.

Satoshi: This is our third European tour. After releasing the new album we'd love to come back as many times as possible, which we couldn't do without our fans. So please continue supporting us in the future as well.

“DELUHI LAST TOUR -VANDALISM-”をもちまして
「解散」する事になりました。

DELUHIは昨年秋のツアー終了から
「今後、より大きなステップへと進むため」に活動休止期間を設けていましたが、
そうした状況の中で、「脱退」の意志・決意を固めてしまったメンバーがいたため、
［Juri／Leda／Aggy／Sujk］という４人によるDELUHIの活動が
継続できないという事態に直面してしまいました。

この事について全員で真摯に話し合いを重ねた結果、
この４人によるDELUHIが存続させられない以上、
「DELUHI」として活動する意味が無いと判断し、
解散という道を選ぶ事になりました。

DELUHIの活動再開を待ち望み、応援し続けていただいた
ファンの皆様に、このようなお知らせをする事になってしまい
本当に申し訳ありません。

メンバー、スタッフ共に悩み抜いた末の決断です。

7月1日からスタートする最後の全国ツアーでは、
DELUHIが結成以来3年間で築いてきたすべてのものを
全力で表現すべく、ファンの皆様と、最高の瞬間が共有できるよう
全身全霊を込めたライヴをします。
どうか最後まで、DELUHIのすべてを皆様で見届けて下さい。
